In the world of Sport, York boasts a number of firsts, including the first inland Agricultural Association (1840), and Fair (1841); the oldest Jockey Club in Australia (1843), founded just two weeks after the now defunct Armidale Club in New South Wales; the first inland Croquet Club (1909) and one of the best known Golf Clubs. The Golf Club and Race Course are also reckoned among the most beautiful, the one commanding special views across the valley, the other set between the river and Mt Bakewell. The Bowls and Croquet Club, to which Tennis was added in 1927, was established on the old Craig orchard and boasts two magnificent vines which at about 100 years old, must be among the oldest vines east of the ranges. In the course of time the York Agricultural Society acquired permanent showgrounds which by 1912 were being used for day time trotting and by 1946 for night trotting. In 1979 a sports complex was built on a corner of the grounds to provide for a host of other sporting activities.
